TWISTED STEEL, SEX APPEAL LP release & breakup show

Like Kenny Rogers said.. ya gotta know when to fold em 🃏.. The boys and I are calling it a day. We lost a lot of momentum waiting for our LP to come out amongst other shit, so were hangin up the noose. Thanks a million to anyone who thought we were cool at some point since 2010. From what we can remember, it’s been a fuckin blast. Our last show will be tomorrow 1/26 on our home turf in Lowell, MA w/ Bombers, Conmen, Fake Boys, and The Stance. In true ass-backwards Nova fashion, it will also be our LP release show. <3

BOSTON HASSLE

Over the past several years, Casanovas In Heat (which includes members of Bloodkrow Butcher and Male Nurses) have amassed a smallish following for their gritty yet affecting melodic punk, and hopefully this 7" will get them the attention they've deserved. I've been checking the site of the ever-reliable Katorga Works for weeks waiting for this single to finally be available, and now that the day is finally here i cannot say enough good things about this release. These two hooky tracks (one of which appeared several years ago on their demo tape) are both exactly what we've come to expect from this crew, and it's immensely satisfying to see the results of their refined sound and ever-improving songwriting. Their music is still rooted in powerpoppy punk (they've covered local legends The Neighborhoods' immortal "No Place Like Home") filtered through melodic 80's mainstays coming out of hardcore like The Replacements, Husker Du, and Naked Raygun as well as more modern melodic punk, and it all congeals into a nearly perfect whole. Chorused guitars jangle and intertwine, the bass rips off melodic runs (check the unbelievable bass hooks before the first verse of "Destiny St."), and the drums explode with busy fills and driving kick-drum work giving the songs an intense propulsiveness. Over all of this, frontman Davy Lyko reels off yelled verses and blood-pumping choruses. Lyko is a formidable tunesmith; the way that these songs unfold is both instantly pleasurable and rewarding upon repeat listens. As you find yourself coming back to their songs again and again, they become increasingly embedded in your psyche, a feat not many bands can pull off quite like Casanovas. A-side "Belvidere" is a new one, and is nearly picture-perfect power-pop - all melodic-yet-muscular hooks, jangling guitars, and unforgettable vocal melodies. B-side "Destiny St." is a staple that was on their 2012 demo, and it just keeps getting better and better. Anthemic, unexpectedly wistful, and driving, the last 30 seconds of the song are the most satisfying moment on this release and maybe in their entire catalog. If you dig the sounds on this 7", I highly recommend checking out their 2012 demo tape and last years Ruins EP that came out on Deranged Records. Pick this one up from Katorga Works, who are generous enough to offer a free download. - Greg Witz

YELLOWGREENRED

Buncha dudes hanging out playing pinball, probably drinking shoplifted Cokes, and one dude refusing to take his sunglasses off indoors, what’s not to like? I wasn’t sure what to expect musically (Kid Dynamite-style pop-punk? The Explosion-esque street-punk? Assück worship?), but I was pleasantly surprised – Casanovas In Heat aren’t just another genre plug-in, they’re an app all their own. Both “Belvidere” and “Destiny St.” remind me of the early ’90s pop-punk that was played by older folks (read: college age) who were into Hüsker Dü and Dinosaur Jr. and other more ‘mature’ influences, bands like Weston, Sleepasaurus and Hellbender and anything else on the poppier end of the Gern Blandsten catalog. So they’ve got that going on with a touch of mid-’80s moody new-wave guitar-rock too, like an obscure Mission Of Burma clone from 1986 who never quite got their due, or some dollar-bin Homestead Records band the record clerk guy swears by. The more I listen to this single, the more I love it, and I’m currently at the point where I kinda wish I was a member of the band – not only do they all hang out at the arcade together, they come across all emotional and complex but they still get to wear leather jackets and drink beer while goofing off, because that’s part of their vibe too. There’s no way I’ll learn the drums in time, but maybe I could pick up the bass parts?
